The Society was formed in 1877 as the Shropshire Archaeological Society, to promote research and general interest in this rich heritage. In 1923 it amalgamated with the Shropshire Parish Register Society. Members come from all walks of life but share a common enthusiasm for Shropshire's past. The Society is the only institution which regularly publishes the result of research into the whole county's past. The Transactions of the Shropshire Archaeological and Historical Society which first appeared in 1878 are the chief means whereby important and scholarly papers on the history and archaeology of Shropshire are published.
